Data visualization: Popular Science
Popular Science had a great collection of data visualization in the last issue. It’s really pretty remarkable. Here are some:
Where Locals Go and Tourists Go
By Eric Fischer, 2010
To understand how others see New York City, Fischer plotted geotagged photos uploaded to flikr. He then analyzed each data point and deduced if the photographer was a local or a tourist based on the person’s past upload hustory. The concentrations of dots on the map indicate which places tourists (red) and locals (blue) found most photo-worthy. —Popular Science

Then he did this for other places, including Boston! (see first one below!)

By Stephen Von Worley, 2010
The pair of images entitled Burger Force Illustrate the relative draw of the eight largest fast-food restaurants in the U.S. For each location, Von Worley computed the influence of nearby restaurants as though they exert a gravitational force on the customer. The resulting map reveals that McDonald’s dominates, especially in the Northeast, but has much more competition from regional chains in the south.
